where do mosquitoes go in the winter

Mosquitoes survive the winter primarily by seeking out warm, sheltered places to enter a dormant state called diapause. Adult female mosquitoes often hide in places like underground sewer drains, sheds, garages, basements, inside logs, woodpiles, and animal burrows. Some species also overwinter as eggs that remain dormant underwater or in moist soil, hatching only when warmer temperatures return in spring. Male mosquitoes generally do not survive the winter as they have short lifespans. Mosquito larvae and pupae mostly do not survive freezing temperatures, but a few species overwinter in the larval stage buried in mud. This adaptation allows mosquitoes to pause their life cycle and survive cold months until conditions improve.
