Boxing originated in ancient Mesopotamia, with the earliest records of the sport dating back to around 3000 BCE where the Sumerians practiced early forms of boxing. Ancient Egypt and India also show historical evidence of boxing- like activities. Formalized boxing first appeared as an Olympic sport in Ancient Greece in 688 BCE. Over millennia, it evolved through various cultures including the Roman Empire and medieval societies, finally developing into the modern regulated sport in Great Britain in the 16th century onward.
