Apollo 11 landed on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility (Mare Tranquillitatis), a relatively smooth and level area near the lunar equator. The lunar module, Eagle, touched down approximately 400 meters west of West crater and about 20 km south-southwest of the crater Sabine D, in the southwestern part of Mare Tranquillitatis. The precise landing coordinates are about 0.67408° N latitude and 23.47297° E longitude
. Neil Armstrong manually piloted the lunar module to avoid a large crater near the intended landing site, and the module landed safely a few kilometers from the original target. Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent about two and a quarter hours exploring the surface at this site, which they named Tranquility Base
