when will southwest start charging for baggage

Southwest Airlines started charging for checked baggage on May 28, 2025. This marked the end of their long-standing policy of allowing two free checked bags per passenger. The fees are $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second. However, passengers who are Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members, or those flying on Business Select or Choice Extra fares, continue to receive two free checked bags, while A-List members and Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card holders get one free checked bag. These charges apply to reservations booked, ticketed, or changed on or after May 28, 2025.
