Typewriters were invented incrementally over time with contributions from various inventors. The concept dates back to an early patent in 1714 by Henry Mill, who filed for a "writing machine." The first patented typewriter prototype that resembles modern designs was made by Christopher Latham Sholes and his associates in 1868 in the United States. This Sholes and Glidden typewriter, commercialized by Remington & Sons in 1873 and marketed in 1874, became the first commercially successful typewriter and introduced the QWERTY keyboard layout still in use today.
