Showers, as a concept of water falling on the user, have existed naturally for thousands of years, such as people bathing under waterfalls or rain. The ancient Greeks, around 500-300 B.C., were the first civilization known to have constructed rudimentary showers in their public baths using aqueducts and plumbing systems to channel water from above. However, the first modern mechanical shower, as recognized today, was invented and patented in 1767 by William Feetham, an English stove maker from London. His design involved a basin, an overhead water tank, a chain, and a hand pump, though it reused water and used cold water, limiting its popularity initially. Further improvements came in the early 1800s with the English Regency Shower, which was closer to modern shower designs. The shower cabin was later invented in 1839 by Aleksander Edward Kierzkowski, progressing the technology towards today's showers. The widespread popularity of showers increased significantly in the mid-19th century with the advent of reliable indoor plumbing, allowing showers to connect to running water sources instead of relying on recycled water.
