Washington state was officially founded and admitted to the United States as the 42nd state on November 11, 1889. Its statehood was proclaimed by President Benjamin Harrison, who signed the official proclamation on that date. The state's constitution was ratified earlier on October 1, 1889, following a constitutional convention held in Olympia in 1889. The territory that became Washington had originally been created as Washington Territory on March 2, 1853, before it eventually became a state in 1889.
