Uranus was discovered on March 13, 1781, by astronomer William Herschel. He observed it using a homemade reflecting telescope from his garden in Bath, England. Initially, Herschel thought the object might be a comet, but it was later confirmed to be a planet—the first new planet discovered since antiquity. This discovery expanded the known boundaries of the Solar System for the first time in history.
