Tylenol was first introduced in 1955 by McNeil Laboratories as a children's elixir containing acetaminophen (the active ingredient). The brand name "Tylenol" was created from the chemical name of acetaminophen. In 1959, Johnson & Johnson acquired McNeil Laboratories, and Tylenol was made available over the counter in 1960.
