The White House construction began with the laying of the cornerstone in October 1792. It took about eight years to build, and the first president to live there was John Adams in 1800. Therefore, the White House was built between 1792 and 1800. The building was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban, and its exterior walls are made of Aquia Creek sandstone painted white. The house has undergone several renovations and expansions since then, including reconstruction after being burned by the British in 1814 during the War of 1812.
