The Titanic was found on September 1, 1985, about 73 years after it sank. The discovery was made by an expedition led by Robert Ballard aboard the U.S. Navy research ship Knorr. They used a submersible sled called "Argo" equipped with a remote-controlled camera to locate the shipwreck under more than 12,400 feet of water. The first underwater images recorded showed one of the Titanic's boilers and later the ship lying upright in two pieces on the ocean floor.
