The printing press was invented by German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg around 1440-1448 in Mainz, Germany. The earliest mention of a mechanized printing press in Europe is from a 1439 lawsuit in Strasbourg mentioning the construction of a press for Gutenberg and his associates. Gutenberg's press used movable metal type and an adapted wine press mechanism, which allowed for much faster and cheaper production of books compared to earlier hand-copying or block printing methods. One of his famous works printed using the press was the Gutenberg Bible in 1455, the first complete book printed with movable type in the West. Although movable type and paper were invented earlier in China and Korea by the 14th century (or even earlier), Gutenberg's printing press was the first mechanized printing press in Europe and marked the beginning of the Printing Revolution that greatly spread knowledge and literacy in the West.
