The Parthenon was built between 447 BCE and 438 BCE, with work on its artistic decorations continuing until around 432 BCE. It was constructed under the leadership of Pericles with architects Ictinus and Callicrates and was dedicated to the goddess Athena. The temple was built on the site of an older temple destroyed by the Persians and is a blend of Doric and Ionic architectural styles, made entirely from Pentelic marble.
