The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci sometime between 1503 and 1519. He began the portrait around 1503 while living in Florence and worked on it intermittently over several years, likely continuing to add layers and refinements until close to his death in 1519. Some sources suggest he worked on it as late as 1516 or 1517 after moving to France. The most commonly accepted timeframe for the painting's creation is between 1503 and 1506, but Leonardo kept working on it beyond that period without officially completing it. The model is believed to be Lisa del Giocondo, wife of Francesco del Giocondo. The painting now resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
