The last government shutdown occurred from December 22, 2018, to January 25, 2019. It lasted 35 days, making it the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. This shutdown happened due to a deadlock over funding for a border wall proposed by President Trump, affecting about one-fourth of government activities and resulting in furloughs for around 800,000 federal employees.
As of late September 2025, there is a looming risk of another government shutdown if Congress and the President do not reach a funding agreement by October 1, 2025, but no new shutdown has yet begun.
