The elevator dates back to ancient times, with the earliest recorded instance credited to the Greek mathematician Archimedes around 236 B.C., who created a primitive elevator powered by hoisting ropes around a drum. Elevators using manual power were also present in the Roman Colosseum around 80 A.D. The first passenger elevator as we recognize it today was installed much later, in 1857. It was designed by Elisha Otis and installed in the E.V. Haughwout Building in New York City. Otis' elevator was steam-powered and included a safety brake which prevented the elevator from falling if the hoisting cable snapped—a key innovation that made elevators safer and practical for widespread use. The first electric elevator was later invented by Werner von Siemens in 1880 in Germany, further advancing elevator technology.
