when was the declaration of independence adopted

The Declaration of Independence was officially adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. This document declared the thirteen American colonies to be free and independent states, no longer subject to British rule. Although the adoption date was July 4, the actual signing of the engrossed parchment copy mostly took place later, primarily on August 2, 1776.
