The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the House of Representatives on January 31, 1865, and by the Senate earlier on April 8, 1864. After its passage through Congress, it was submitted to the state legislatures for ratification. The necessary three-fourths of the states ratified the amendment on December 6, 1865, making it officially part of the Constitution. This amendment abolished slavery in the United States.
