Spider-Man was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. He first appeared in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15, which was published in August 1962. The character was groundbreaking as a teenage superhero who was not a sidekick and dealt with the struggles of adolescence and young adulthood. Peter Parker, Spider-Man's secret identity, gains his powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider and learns the lesson "with great power comes great responsibility" after the death of his Uncle Ben. This creation marked the beginning of one of the most popular and commercially successful superheroes.
