The Book of Psalms was written over a span of about 1,000 years. The earliest psalm, Psalm 90, is traditionally attributed to Moses and is thought to have been written around 1410 BC during the Israelites' time in the wilderness. The majority of the Psalms were composed during the reigns of King David and King Solomon, approximately between 1010 BC and 930 BC. Later psalms were written during the exilic and post-exilic periods, extending roughly to 430 BC or even into the mid-400s BC. Thus, the composition of Psalms spans from about 1410 BC with Moses to perhaps as late as the 5th century BC, involving multiple authors over centuries, including David, Solomon, Asaph, the sons of Korah, and others. The final form of the Psalter was likely completed sometime during the Second Temple period (second century BC to first century AD), with the order and content finalized over time.
