Pope Francis was elected on March 13, 2013. He was chosen on the fifth ballot during the papal conclave held to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI, who had resigned earlier that year. Upon his election, Jorge Mario Bergoglio took the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.
