Lung cancer was first identified as a disease around 1700. An Italian anatomist, Morgagni GB, described lung cancer in his book published in 1761. Later in the 19th century, Dr. René Laennec at the Hopital Necar in Paris was the first to describe cancers arising specifically from the lung in his postmortem pathological observations. By the early 20th century, with the advent of chest x-rays and bronchoscopy, lung cancer diagnosis became more reliable. The strong link between tobacco smoking and lung cancer was first suggested in the late 1800s and was firmly established in the mid-20th century through landmark epidemiological studies in the 1950s.
