Hurricane Katrina occurred in late August 2005. It began as a tropical wave near the Lesser Antilles on August 19, 2005, became a tropical depression on August 23, and quickly intensified into a hurricane. Katrina made its first landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Florida on the evening of August 25. It then strengthened rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico to a Category 5 hurricane by August 28. Katrina made its major landfall on the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, hitting Louisiana and Mississippi as a Category 3 hurricane and causing devastating flooding and damage. The storm dissipated by August 31, 2005.
