Harvard University was founded on October 28, 1636. It was established by a vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony as the first college in the American colonies. The college was initially called New College and was located in what was then called New Towne, now Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1639, the college was renamed Harvard College in honor of its first major benefactor, the Puritan clergyman John Harvard, who donated his library of over 400 books and half of his estate to the institution.
