Antifa as a modern movement in the United States can trace its roots back to the 1980s with the Anti-Racist Action (ARA) group, but one of the first American Antifa groups explicitly using that name was Rose City Antifa, founded in 2007 in Portland, Oregon. Historically, Antifa's ideological and tactical inspiration traces back to anti-fascist movements in early 20th- century Europe, particularly Germany and Italy in response to the rise of fascism during that period. The German term "Antifaschistische Aktion," dating back to the late Weimar Republic era, is a precursor to the modern usage of "Antifa." Thus, while the name "Antifa" is relatively recent in the U.S. context (since 2007), its anti-fascist roots extend much further back to Europe in the early 1900s.
