Southwest Airlines started charging for checked bags on May 28, 2025. From that date, the airline began charging $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second checked bag for reservations booked or changed on or after May 28. Previously, Southwest had offered two free checked bags for every flight, but this policy ended to align with industry standards and to boost business revenue. Some customers, such as preferred members of the Rapid Rewards A-List program, Business Select or Choice Extra fare travelers, and Rapid Rewards credit card holders, still receive free checked bags as part of their perks. This change also came along with the introduction of new fare types and an end to the open seating policy for Southwest.
