Southwest Airlines changed its baggage policy starting May 28, 2025. From that date, the airline ended its long-standing "two bags fly free" policy and began charging fees for checked bags. The fees are $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second. Exceptions are made for certain elite customers:
- Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members and travelers on Business Select fares can still check up to two bags for free.
- A-List members and holders of Southwest's co-branded credit card receive one free checked bag.
This policy change applies to all flights booked on or after May 28, 2025. Tickets purchased before this date retain the original free baggage terms for those reservations. The change was announced in March 2025 and reflects an alignment with industry standards, as virtually all other major U.S. airlines charge for checked bags.
