You need a REAL ID to fly on domestic commercial flights within the United States starting May 7, 2025, if you do not have a valid passport or another acceptable federally approved form of identification. The REAL ID is a state- issued driver's license or ID card that meets enhanced security standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005. Identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant will no longer be accepted by TSA for domestic air travel after this date. Children under 18 do not need to provide identification when traveling domestically with a companion. Alternative forms of acceptable ID include a valid U.S. passport, U.S. Department of Defense ID, and certain trusted traveler cards. The REAL ID cards typically have a star marking in the upper right corner to indicate compliance.
