Woolly mammoths largely went extinct on the mainland around 10,000 years ago during the early Holocene. However, small isolated populations survived much longer on islands. The last known population survived on Wrangel Island in the Arctic until about 4,000 years ago. Another population persisted on St. Paul Island in Alaska until around 5,600 years ago. The extinction of woolly mammoths was a gradual process influenced by a combination of factors, including climate change that reduced their habitat and possibly human hunting. The final populations on Wrangel Island were isolated and lived long after the main mainland populations disappeared. Some studies suggest that sudden events such as disease or environmental changes may have also contributed to their final extinction 4,000 years ago.
