The United States bought Alaska from Russia in 1867. The treaty for the sale was signed on March 30, 1867, and the purchase was ratified by the U.S. Senate on May 15 of that year. American sovereignty over Alaska became legally effective on October 18, 1867. The U.S. paid $7.2 million for Alaska, which amounted to about two cents per acre.
