The national tennis tournament, known as the U.S. National Championships and later the U.S. Open, started in August 1881. The men's singles and men's doubles were first played at this national tournament held on grass courts at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. The women's singles tournament was added in 1887. This tournament is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world and has evolved into the modern U.S. Open tennis tournament held annually in New York City.
