The bombing of Pearl Harbor occurred on December 7, 1941. The attack began at 7:48 a.m. Hawaiian time when Japanese aircraft launched a surprise assault on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack lasted just over an hour in two waves before the Japanese forces withdrew shortly after 9:00 a.m. This devastating event resulted in the destruction of more than 180 aircraft, damage to or destruction of many ships, and the deaths of more than 2,400 U.S. military personnel and civilians.
