Olympus Mons on Mars formed around 3 billion years ago during the early Hesperian period. It was created by prolonged volcanic activity from a magma plume beneath the Martian surface, which gradually built the shield volcano by successive lava flows over billions of years. The volcano last erupted about 25 million years ago, indicating it is relatively young in geological terms.
