Abraham Lincoln died at 7:22 a.m. on April 15, 1865. He was shot the previous evening on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. After being shot, Lincoln was carried across the street to a boarding house (the Petersen House), where he remained until his death the following morning. Mary Lincoln, his wife, was not present at his death. Vice President Andrew Johnson was sworn in as the 17th president later that day.
