George Washington served as the first president of the United States from April 30, 1789, to March 4, 1797. He was unanimously elected in the 1788–1789 presidential election and served two terms, choosing to retire after that. His first inauguration took place on April 30, 1789, and his second term began with his second inauguration on March 4, 1793. Washington's presidency ended on March 4, 1797, and he was succeeded by John Adams.
