Father JunÃpero Serra died on August 28, 1784, at Mission San Carlos Borromeo in Monterey (Carmel), California. He was 70 years old at the time of his death and is buried under the sanctuary floor of the mission church he had built. Serra was a Spanish Franciscan missionary known for founding the first nine of the 21 California missions and is revered as the Apostle of California. His death marked the end of his longstanding work in the region, and he was later canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
