After wisdom tooth extraction, it is generally recommended to avoid smoking for at least 72 hours (3 days) to allow the blood clot at the extraction site to form and start healing. Smoking too soon can dislodge this blood clot, leading to a painful condition called dry socket, delayed healing, increased risk of infection, and other complications. Ideally, waiting longer than 3 days before smoking is better for recovery. Some sources even suggest avoiding smoking for 5 to 7 days for optimal healing. If smoking cannot be avoided, it should be done with minimal inhalation force, and one should watch for signs of dry socket or infection and consult a dentist if these occur.
