Babies can typically begin to sit up with support around 6 months of age. Most babies master sitting independently between 7 to 9 months old. Some may start sitting with help earlier, from about 4 months, but unassisted sitting usually develops closer to 6 months or beyond. By 9 months, many babies can sit well without support and can even get in and out of a sitting position with some help. Babies generally develop the necessary head control and upper body strength to sit independently within this age range.
