President Ulysses S. Grant was arrested for speeding in 1872 while driving his horse-drawn carriage in Washington, D.C. He was stopped by Officer William H. West for racing his buggy on M Street, after already receiving a warning the day before. Grant was taken to the police station, where he posted a $20 bond but forfeited it by not appearing in court. This is the only recorded instance of a sitting U.S. president being arrested, and the event is noted for Grant's respect for the rule of law, as he did not resist the arrest and commended the officer for doing his duty.
