Poseidon was the Greek god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. He was also associated with water generally, floods, drought, and fishing. Poseidon was one of the twelve Olympian gods and was considered the protector of seafarers and the guardian of many Hellenic cities and colonies. He was depicted as a mature man with a sturdy build and was often crowned with a wreath of wild celery or a simple headband. Poseidons most distinctive attribute was the trident, a three-pronged fishing spear. He was known as the "earth-shaker" and was worshipped as a fertility god. Poseidon was a son of the Titans Kronos and Rheia and a brother of the gods Zeus, Hades, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia. He was married to the marine-goddess Amphitrite, and their union produced Triton, who was half-human, half-fish.
