Derrick Groves was in jail for being convicted of murdering two people with an assault rifle during a family gathering at Mardi Gras in 2018. He was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder, related to this shooting, which was linked to a drug dispute. He faced a life sentence without parole for these crimes. Groves escaped from the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans in May 2025 while awaiting sentencing and was later captured in Atlanta after a months-long manhunt.
