The Hacienda Alsacia farm researches and develops new Arabica coffee tree varietals that are specifically bred to be disease- and climate-resistant, with a particular focus on resistance to coffee leaf rust (roya), a devastating fungus affecting coffee crops. These varietals are created through traditional hybridization methods, selecting plants with good structure, high productivity, excellent cup quality, and disease resistance. The farm maintains a diverse "Core Collection" of the 100 most genetically diverse Arabica strains in the world, sourced from Ethiopia, and uses these to develop new hybrids that can better withstand climate change and diseases. Starbucks' research at Hacienda Alsacia aims to ensure a sustainable future for coffee by producing high-quality, rust-resistant Arabica coffee trees that help farmers adapt to changing environmental conditions. The farm also distributes millions of these disease- and climate-resistant seedlings to coffee farmers in regions affected by coffee rust, such as Guatemala and Costa Rica, to promote sustainable coffee production globally
