Before graduation, the tassel usually goes on the right side of your cap if you are a high school or bachelor’s student, and on the left if you are a master’s or doctoral graduate.
Standard tassel position
For high school and most college bachelor’s ceremonies, the tassel is worn on the right side before the degree is officially conferred, then moved to the left during the ceremony when instructed. Master’s and doctoral graduates typically wear the tassel on the left side for the entire ceremony and do not move it.
Check your school’s instructions
Some schools modify the tradition slightly, for example asking everyone to start on the left for photo reasons or following a specific local custom. If your ceremony program or rehearsal gives directions that differ from the usual right-before, left-after rule, follow your school’s guidance.
