HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the bodys immune system. It is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a person with HIV, most commonly during unprotected sex or through sharing injection drug equipment. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) . AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection that occurs when the bodys immune system is badly damaged because of the virus. HIV can be controlled with proper medical care, and people with HIV who get effective HIV treatment can live long, healthy lives and protect their partners. There is currently no effective cure for HIV, and once people get HIV, they have it for life. People with HIV who take HIV medicine as prescribed and get and keep an undetectable viral load can live long and healthy lives and will not transmit HIV to their HIV-negative partners through sex.
