Your poop can turn green for a number of reasons, many of which are related to your diet
. In other instances, green stool may be related to medications or infection
. Reasons for green poop:
- Leafy green vegetables Eating a lot of spinach, kale, and broccoli can result in green poop because of the high chlorophyll content in these vegetables
- Food coloring Green, blue, or purple food coloring found in candy, drinks, and cake frosting can contribute to green-colored stool
- Matcha This powdered green tea can cause green stool
- Blue foods Consuming naturally blue foods, such as blueberries and blackberries, can cause green stool
- Bile If bile moves too quickly through your intestines, it doesn't have the chance to change from green to brown
- Antibiotics Certain antibiotics can disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in your gut, which can change the color of your stool
- Infections Bacterial infections, such as Salmonella or E. coli , and viral infections, like norovirus, can cause changes in stool color
- Medications Iron supplements, antacids, and bismuth subsalicylate, an ingredient used in antidiarrheal medications, can cause green stool
