The official languages spoken in Puerto Rico are Spanish and English, with Spanish being the dominant language. Over 95% of the population speaks Spanish in education, business, and daily life, and Puerto Rican Spanish includes unique words and phrases influenced by Taino, African dialects, and English. English is also an official language but is spoken by less than 10% of the population regularly, mainly in tourist areas and schools. Many Puerto Ricans are bilingual to some degree, and a mix called "Spanglish" is commonly used in conversation. The Taino language, once spoken by the indigenous people, is now mostly extinct but influences some place names and cultural expressions.
