According to the Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible or the Old Testament), God promised and subsequently gave to Abraham and his descendants a land that included everything from the River of Egypt to the Euphrates river, and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Lebanon mountains. This promise was confirmed to Jacob and his descendants. The Book of Exodus describes the Promised Land in terms of the territory from the River of Egypt to the Euphrates river. The Israelites lived in a smaller area of former Canaanite land and land east of the Jordan River after Moses led the Exodus out of Egypt, and the Book of Deuteronomy presents this occupation as Gods fulfillment of the promise. On todays map, the land God has stated belongs to Israel includes everything modern-day Israel possesses, plus all of the territory occupied by the Palestinians (the West Bank and Gaza), plus some of Egypt and Syria, plus all of Jordan, plus some of Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Thus, Israel currently possesses only a fraction of the land God has promised; the rest of their promised land is yet to be fulfilled.
