Tyler Robinson used a German-made Mauser Model 98 bolt-action rifle in the shooting of Charlie Kirk. This rifle is a decades-old, .30-06 caliber bolt- action gun that originally was manufactured for military use during both World Wars. The firearm belonged to Robinson's grandfather and is so old that it likely predates U.S. laws enacted in 1968 requiring firearms to carry serial numbers, making the rifle difficult or impossible to trace. Robinson himself indicated in text messages that the rifle likely had no serial number and he chose it for that reason. The rifle requires manual reloading after each shot by pulling the bolt back and then pushing it forward to chamber a new round.
