Flounder from Disney's "The Little Mermaid" is not actually a flounder fish. Despite his name, Flounder is designed as a bright yellow and blue tropical fish with a round body, which is quite different from real flounders that are flat, asymmetrical, and typically brownish in color to blend with the sea floor. More specifically, Flounder closely resembles a type of damselfish called the Atlantic sergeant major, which is a colorful fish found in the Caribbean. Flounders, on the other hand, belong to an order of flatfish (pleuronectiformes) with both eyes on one side of their bodies, living on the ocean floor and having a flat, diamond-shaped appearance. The character Flounder was likely created for visual appeal and to fit the tropical setting of the story rather than biological accuracy.
