The standard deduction amounts for the 2024 tax year are as follows:
- Single filers: $14,600
- Married filing jointly: $29,200
- Head of household: $21,900
- Married filing separately: $14,600 (same as single filers)
- Qualifying surviving spouse: $29,200 (same as married filing jointly)
Additionally, taxpayers who are 65 or older or blind can claim an extra standard deduction:
- $1,950 additional for single filers or heads of household
- $1,550 additional for each spouse if married filing jointly
If you can be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer's return, your standard deduction is limited to the greater of $1,300 or your earned income plus $450, but it cannot exceed the basic standard deduction for your filing status
